What drove me to build ConnectProtect®

When my parents immigrated to the UK in 1968, they did it with one sole purpose in mind: to give their children a better chance in life than what they would have had if they stayed India.
Growing up, I saw firsthand the sacrifices they made for us: working long hours, putting their personal wants and desires aside and putting our needs before theirs. As a result, it gave me a fighting chance and the confidence to succeed, knowing that I had people who loved me and would back me up in my endeavours.
Whenever I failed at something, my mother would put her arm round me and say, “Hey, don’t worry…why are you worrying? We’re here for you,” and then work with me to fix the problem. It meant a lot. The reassurance and comfort that they extended gave me the strength and confidence to keep going, keep progressing, and keep learning.
I remember the day my first business, a bar in Clapham, failed. I had lost everything, not only financially, but also my self-confidence and self-esteem. It was a really difficult time. Again, my parents were there. They did not show their disapproval or disappointment, they did not taunt me, but instead gave me the backing and support to build myself back up again.
From my late parents, I learnt something important that is now deep in my core and at the core of Secon Cyber – when things don’t go to plan, or when things go wrong, you need support to get back on track. That support may come in different guises, but when the chips are down, you need people around you who can share your pain, stand shoulder to shoulder with you, guide you and put you back on track.
When Secon Cyber started in 1999, we were fortunate to be at the right place at the right time. The internet was blowing up and with that came the threat of cyber-attacks. It was a good time for us, as companies were buying security technologies to protect themselves and for a lot of these companies, we were their chosen reseller.
But something did not sit right with me. As a reseller, I was the middleman between our customer and the technology vendor, and I could not exercise those core values that I had learnt from my parents. You see, when companies had an incident their first point of call was to call me, as I was the one who had sold them their security product. But when they called and asked for help, I was helpless; the best I could do was to use my relationships with our vendor partners to get things fixed, but I was at the mercy of the vendor.
We would have to move at the vendor’s pace, adhere to their rules and regulations, worse still – completely stop support if the problem was outside the remit of the vendor’s technology. For my customer this may not have been good enough or even appropriate, it certainly did not solve their problem. I felt frustrated. I felt I was not supporting my client, I felt I had let them down, and I was not able to help them out of their situation – this was not good enough for me and was not how it was meant to be.
I started to put myself in our clients’ shoes and ask myself, as a business owner, what would I need if we were under attack? And so began our ConnectProtect® journey.
ConnectProtect® Managed Detection and Response has allowed us to exercise those core values I learnt from my parents. It has allowed us to take control of a situation. It has allowed us to stand shoulder to shoulder with our clients especially when the chips were down. It has allowed us to remove anxiety from our customers knowing that their infrastructure is being monitored. It has also allowed us to let our customer dictate the urgency and priority level of their incident.
Functionally, there were other drivers that influenced our design decisions for ConnectProtect®. As a business owner myself, cost is always at the forefront of my mind. I did not want to burden my customers with high costs to get onto the platform, so we designed ConnectProtect® in a way that did not require any additional products or licenses to get onto the service.
As a reseller, I learnt how important it was for companies to choose which technologies they use internally. I did not want to take that choice away from our clients or force them to use a particular technology, which is why I made sure ConnectProtect® was built to support our customers’ desired business outcomes and allow our clients to continue utilising the technologies they had already purchased.
My late parents did all they could to remove hurdles in my life, to remove my fears and anxiety. Their purpose was to protect to me as I went through life. Our vision for Secon Cyber is the same – to remove the anxiety from our clients and to give people back their senses.
ConnectProtect® Managed Detection and Response takes us one step closer in realising this vision.
